Preserving Rockhaven Sanatarium – You Can Help!

By | IM Articles, Marilyn News | No Comments

Rockhaven Sanatarium is best known to Marilyn fans as the place where Marilyn’s mother, Gladys, lived for many years.  Marilyn was able to provide for Gladys’ stay at Rockhaven from the time that she really began to make it as a star and could afford to cover the fees.  She provided for Gladys continued stay there in her will, allowing her mother to live in comfort in a place designed for women with mental illness.

Gladys (right) at Rockhaven with Inez Melson, who became her guardian after Marilyn’s death.

Rockhaven is more than just the place where Marilyn’s mother lived; it was a unique concept that was born of the need to create a place where women suffering with mental illness could be treated with kindness and compassion.  Founded in 1923 by a psychiatric nurse by the name of Agnes Richards, Rockhaven was a rare sanatarium owned and run by women, for women.

The gates at Rockhaven today.

The beautiful grounds.

After decades of treating and caring for women like Gladys, Rockhaven closed in 2006 and has since been in danger of destruction.  The historic importance of the buildings and the stories of the women who founded it, worked there, and lived there are all in danger of being lost to time.

Immortal Marilyn is proud to support the work of Friends of Rockhaven, a group dedicated to preserving the buildings and their history.  As part of our support, we are calling on all of our members to join us in a letter-writing petition campaign to the city of Glendale asking them to restore and protect Rockhaven as a place of historical importance.

This is where you come in!  Immortal Marilyn is preparing a letter that you can print off, sign, and send off to City Hall to lend your voice to the effort to save Rockhaven.  All it takes is your signature and a stamp to help us let the Mayor and the city council know that we believe this is a place that deserves to be preserved for future generations.

Download the letter from Google docs here, or contact us for a copy.  Simply fill it out with your name, sign in, and mail it to the address on the letter!

You can visit the Friends of Rockhaven website to learn more about who they are and their work, and you can follow them on Facebook to keep up on the latest news!

Please help us in this important effort to save a historic place!!

Marilyn Didn’t Have a Daughter: World News Daily Report Strikes Again

By | IM Articles, Marilyn News | No Comments

The website World News Daily Report has been making headlines recently for stealing a woman’s photo and attaching it to a hoax story that has gone viral .  They are also the same site that falsely claimed that a retired CIA agent confessed to killing Marilyn, and in that case also used a stolen picture to accompany their hoax. Despite facing potential legal action for slander and defamation from the woman they claimed had fourteen children by fourteen different men, they are at it again.

On February 22, they published a story titled “Woman Claims She Is The Daughter Of Marilyn Monroe and JFK.” They go on to say that a woman named ‘Gladys Baker Morris’, who was born in June 1962, has  launched court proceedings to prove that she is the daughter of the superstar and the President. The site claims that she has a birth certificate with the names Norma Jeane Mortenson and John F. Kennedy on it. A photo of the supposed ‘Gladys Morris’ appears at the top of the article.

However…the photo the site is using is not of ‘Gladys Morris’ but of actress Susan Griffiths, who has absolutely never made any such claims. Griffiths, a Marilyn lookalike and accomplished actress, has portrayed Marilyn on film numerous times, most notably on Quantam Leap, Nip/Tuck and the movie Pulp Fiction. She has long been a fan of Marilyn and is very well known for working hard to honor her legacy. The photo was lifted from a Daily Mail article about Susan that appeared last year.

Actress Susan Griffiths - not Marilyn's daughter

Actress Susan Griffiths – not Marilyn’s daughter

When asked about the article, Ms. Griffiths stated, “Due to the fact that photos are all ever the internet, unscrupulous agencies feel they have the right to print and say whatever they feel, no matter how false or hurtful it may be. I know the lovely Marilyn community knows I would never claim this, and I send much love to all of them for their support.”

Photos of Marilyn throughout 1962 prove there was no pregnancy.

Photos of Marilyn throughout 1962 prove there was no pregnancy.

Other claims in the article are also complete fabrications. The Marilyn/JFK affair rumors have been greatly exaggerated and outright lied about over the years. You can read more about how the lies came about in this Immortal Marilyn article. Photos of Marilyn from each month from January to July 1962 prove conclusively that she could not have been pregnant and given birth at any point during that year.
WorldNewsDailyReport claims that the fictional birth certificate has the name Norma Jeane Mortenson on it….but that was not Marilyn’s in 1962. In 1956, she had her name legally changed to Marilyn Monroe. Post-1956 any official or legal documents would have had the name Marilyn Monroe on them.

The hoax article also states “Some persistent rumors, originating from her gynecologist, Dr. Leon Krohn, have suggested that Marilyn Monroe had become pregnant again in 1961, and given birth to a baby girl in June 1962.” While Marilyn’s gynecologist was indeed named Dr. Leon Krohn, he has never made these ludicrous claims and the rumors definitely did not originate from him.

They also state that the fictional Gladys Morris “intends to sue the Marilyn Monroe Foundation over rights and royalties”—except there is no Marilyn Monroe Foundation that holds the rights or royalties to Marilyn’s estate. Marilyn’s rights and royalties belong to The Estate of Marilyn Monroe, LLC.

While some may argue that this is harmless satire, it’s potentially harmful to Susan Griffiths’ reputation and career. As someone who has always tried to portray Marilyn with respect, people being misled into thinking that she is the one making these outrageous claims due to her photo being used can get a false impression of her. It is also incredibly hurtful to Marilyn’s legacy. Marilyn was a woman who badly wanted children. She said in an interview “The thing I want more than anything else? I want to have children. I used to feel for every child I had, I would adopt another.” Unfortunately, motherhood was not destined for Marilyn. She suffered two miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy, events that were shattering to her. She underwent surgery to correct her chronic endometriosis in an unsuccessful effort to be able to carry a pregnancy to term. To take a woman’s greatest heartache and turn it into click bait under the guise of ‘satire’ is reprehensible.

On behalf of honoring Marilyn and respecting Susan, please do not click or share this incredibly defamatory article from World News Daily Report. Although buried in their site is a disclaimer claiming that they are not responsible for any inaccuracies, and ‘all characters appearing on this website-even those based on real people-are entirely fictional’ Marilyn Monroe was a real person, and Susan Griffiths is a real person. Neither should have their names sullied from a website hiding behind very loosely defined satire.

Candid Shots of Marilyn in New York Highlight Auction

By | IM Articles, Marilyn News | No Comments

auc4When Marilyn Monroe made the move to New York City in 1955, she was welcomed by a dedicated group of teenage fans dubbed The Monroe Six. They would follow her around the city hoping to catch a glimpse of her, and eventually endeared themselves to her. She permitted them nearly unfettered access to snap photos of her when she was out and about in the city, and the members would make copies of each photo for the others in the group.

auc2
On February 20, 2016, Heritage Auctions offered a unique glimpse into Marilyn through the eyes of one of her fans when they auctioned off photos from the collection of Jimmy Collins, one of the members of The Monroe Six. A massive collection of 183 snapshots, divided into sixteen lots, was auctioned off to collectors and fetched the high prices that Marilyn memorabilia always draws. Prices realized ranged from $800 for a group of eight snapshots of Marilyn at the Gladstone Hotel up to $5,500 for a lot of 22 snapshots of Marilyn at various public events, including the premieres of The Rose Tattoo, The Pajama Game and Gigi.

auc3Also included in the auction were seven individual snapshots that had been autographed by Marilyn. These special pieces garnered between $1,450 and $5,000 each.

Other highlights included several items that were owned by Marilyn herself. A terracotta planter and wooden candlestick each sold for $2,000; a small wooden chest inlaid with colored marbles sold for $2,200; and a unique star shaped light fixture that hung in her last home reached $7,500. A wood engraving by Edward Gordon-Craig that was owned by Marilyn remained unsold.

DiMaggio’s Doctor Pushes Another Book of “Secrets” About Marilyn

By | IM Articles, Marilyn News, Uncategorised | No Comments

Another day, another tell-all book that promises new secrets about Marilyn’s life.

This time, we have a doctor, Dr. Rock Positano, who claims Joe DiMaggio confided in him the secrets of his marriage to Marilyn, right down to an eyebrow-raising description of their sex life.  The New York Post’s equally sensational headline “Botched Surgery Made Joe DiMaggio Impotent” screams money-maker, and the article about the upcoming book is bound to create a whole new set of commonly held beliefs about Marilyn and Joe’s ill-fated nine-month marriage.

mm and joe

Let’s start with the fact that Joe was famously tight-lipped about Marilyn.  He refused to speak of her, never gave interviews or talked about her to the press, and friends have said that he would become angry when asked about her.  But we’re to believe he said this to his doctor about their sex life:

“When we got together in the bedroom, it was like the gods were fighting.  There was lightning and thunderclouds above us.”

Next, we have a claim that the marriage ended because of Marilyn’s infertility, which doesn’t stand up to much scrutiny.  Marilyn was at the height of her career and in no way ready to settle down and be a housewife.  While nobody knows for sure whether or not Marilyn and Joe were making a real effort to have a baby, most tales of the marriage’s trouble center on Marilyn’s unwillingness to settle down and give up her career, and Joe’s desire for a good housewife to stay home and cook for hime like his mother.  That doesn’t add up to infertility being a major issue in the marriage, particularly since the couple was barely married long enough to have made a real effort at having a baby and spent much of the marriage either traveling or on a movie set (Marilyn filmed The Seven Year Itch during their brief marriage).

Without a doubt, infertility and failed pregnancies contributed to the end of Marilyn’s marriage to Arthur Miller, which might lead one to believe the same was true of her marriage to Joe – but there’s no evidence to support that idea.

Finally, we bring in the Kennedys, because nothing sells better than that tired old the-Kennedys-killed-her song and dance.  Did Joe hate the Kennedys?  Maybe.  Did he believe they actually murdered her?  I sincerely doubt it.

But even if this doctor is telling the truth – even if Joe did tell him all about thunderclaps in the bedroom and Marilyn’s inability to conceive (and I sincerely doubt that he did), to put it all in a book is an egregious lapse in both professional and personal trust, capped by telling the world Joe suffered from erectile dysfunction, too.  If in fact this doctor is the one person Joe chose to open up to about Marilyn – after decades of refusing to speak of her – then to take that trust and write a book is downright despicable.

But once again, the promise getting in on the money to be made of sensational stories involving Marilyn matters more than trust – or the truth.
