Did Marilyn have 6 toes? No, she had 10 toes, 5 on each foot. This rumor was started by photographer Joseph Jasgur as a means to make money off a photo he took of her when she was a young model that had a clump of sand next to her baby toe. The photo never sold for the one million dollar asking price. Justice does prevail sometimes!
Was Marilyn really a size 16? No, she wore the equivalent of what is today a size 4, to a size 10 at her heaviest. Her waist was never larger than 24 inches, and for most of her life, it was a tiny 22 inches.
Was Marilyn left handed? No, she really was right handed. Not sure how this one got started, we think it could be something as simple as seeing a reversed photo of her signing something. Next thing you know it turned up in a book on Marilyn and took on a life of its own.
Did Marilyn really have as many as twelve abortions? No. In fact there was not evidence of even one abortion found during her autopsy.
Did Marilyn really brag about sleeping with the Kennedy's? No, Contrary to what some like to report, Marilyn was a very discreet woman. Rumors which have harmed Marilyn's image in this way can be traced for the most part back to Robert Slatzer and Jeanne Carmen. Check out our "Twilight" page for more information on these two.
Was Marilyn the secret model for Disney's Tinker Bell? No she was not. A model named Margaret Kerry was the true inspiration for Tinker Bell.
Did Norma Jeane work as a prostitute when she was starting out in the 1940's? No. The rumors of this just do not hold up upon close investigation of her life at that time. Quote from Marilyn.."Men who tried to buy me with money made me sick. There were plenty of them. The mere fact that I turned down offers ran my price up...I didn't take their money, and they couldn't get by my front door, but I kept riding in their limousines and sitting beside them in swanky places. There was always a chance of a job and another wolf might spot you."
And to George Barris she said..."If there's only one thing in my life I was to be proud of, it's that I have never been a kept woman."
Was Norma Jeane named for Norma Talmadge and Jean Harlow? Harlean Carpenter didn't change her name to Jean Harlow until 1928, when Norma Jeane was two years old. As far as the Norma Talmadge claim, it is said that Gladys was a huge fan and it is true, it is also said she named her daughter for a child she once cared for from Kentucky.
Can Marilyn's fan trust claims by Robert Slatzer, Jeanne Carmen or Ted Jordan that they were a part of Marilyn's life? No. Absolutely not. There is no proof of any sort of friendship/relationship/marriage with any of these people. They'd met MM in passing if at all.
Did Marilyn sing "When I fall in Love", " Santa Baby" and "Teach me Tiger"? No. They were recorded by Doris Day, Eartha Kitt and April Stevens.
Is it true that mental illness ran in Marilyn's family and that Marilyn was mentally ill? The mental illness, or insanity that befell Marilyn's family can be understood and explained a lot better today than it was all those years ago. Marilyn's great-grandfather, Tilford Marion Hogan committed suicide due to chronic, severe health problems, coupled with the Great Depression which devastated his already eternal poverty. Bereft of pride and hope, he hung himself on May 29, 1933, simply another suicide statistic during the worst year of the Great Depression. Grandfather, Otis Monroe died of neurosyphilis, aka 'syphilis of the brain'. He was not insane before, and was killed by this infection that destroyed his brain tissue. Grandmother, Della Hogan Monroe Grainger died of heart disease, which caused impaired mentation due to insufficient oxygen to the brain. There is no doubt that Marilyn's mother, Gladys Pearl Monroe Baker Mortensen Ely suffered from severe and chronic depression at the very least. Upon news of her grandfather Otis's suicide she became convinced there was a blight of mental illness on the family tree from which she could not be dissuaded. This was the beginning of Gladys' serious decline into psychosis that pretty much lasted for the rest of her life. Poor psychiatric practices and medications of the day gave her no real help. Marilyn too was haunted by the same demons as her mother with regard to the mental illness in the family. She suffered from depression, insomnia, and was possibly bi-polar. Had Marilyn been born twenty years later she would have been able to be helped with the advances in the mental health field. *Source on family mental history, "Marilyn Monroe" by Donald Spoto
Is it Marilyn who stars in the porn "stag film" movie "Apple Knockers and the Coke Bottle"? No it is not. This stag/porn film made in 1948 starred Arline Hunter, sometimes spelled Arlene. And the crazy thing about it is that Ms Hunter bares very little resemblance to Marilyn. How anyone could mistake her for Marilyn is beyond us.
Was there really a 4th husband (between Dougherty & DiMaggio) named Robert Slatzer? No evidence exists to prove these claims. In fact, evidence to the contrary exists. Check out our "Twilight" page for more information on Robert Slatzer.
‘A sex symbol is a heavy load to carry, especially when one is tired, hurt and bewildered.’ This quote is often credited to Marilyn, but in fact it was Clara Bow who said this upon learning of Marilyn's death.
And for some of the more outrageous.......
Marilyn was not abducted by aliens, nor is she alive having lived her life out in Australia as a sheep farmer's wife, and grandmother many times over, (although that's a nice notion isn't it). She was not a teenage hooker who had Elizabeth Short aka the 'Black Dahlia' for a female lover. She was not assassinated by J.Edgar Hoover, nor did she give birth to RFK or JFK's baby. Marilyn never gave birth. Marilyn was not a Russian spy who romanced JFK and Nikita Khrushchev at the same time. Neither was Fidel Castro or Sam Giancana a lover of hers. And Marilyn was not bitten by a vampire and then murdered by the FBI to prevent her from biting JFK!
